The neem tree (Azadirachta Indica) is almost completely free from insects and pests. This s due to the presence of the active compound 'Azadirachtin' (tetranortriterpenoids) which acts as a growth regulator or anti-feedant. Though neem terpenoids are present in almost all living tissue parts of the plant, azadirachtin is most concentrated in the oil.
A neem tree normally starts fruiting after 3-5 years. In about 10 years it becomes fully productive. Under favourable conditions, fresh fruit yield per grown tree is about 50 kg per year. Neem is best planted in mixed stands. |
