ALERTOL - Milestones in the Development of Bacosides A & B obtained from Bacopa Monnieri

Milestones in the Development of Bacosides A & B obtained from Bacopa Monnieri

01 1963-67
The chemical constituents of the plant Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) were isolated.
02

1975-78
The traditional claim of Bacopa Monnieri, viz, the enhancement of mental retention capacity was confirmed by neurobiological investigations and the results were presented at the meeting of the Xth Indian Pharmacological Society, Varanasi.

03

1982
The first full fledged paper on the neurobiological effects of the aqueous suspension of an alcohol extract of Bacopa Monnieri was published. The findings were in conformity with the Ayurvedic claim and indicated that Bacopa Monnieri improved the performance of rats in various learning schedules.

04

1986
Having confirmed the traditional claims of Bacopa Monnieri the next logical step was the neurobio-evaluation of its active constituents. The investigation performed showed that the saponins termed as Bacosides A and B were responsible for the facilitation of mental retention capacity of this Ayurvedic plant. The results were presented at the International Symposium on Traditional Medicine and Pharmacology held in Beijing, October 1986.

05

1988
Further investigations were carried out and the results were presented at the XVI meeting of the prestigious Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psycho-Pharmacologicum (C.I.N.R.) in Munich, 15-19 August 1988

06

1990-94
Investigations  to  study  the mechanism of  action of  Bacosides were

carried out and also the property of Bacosides in attenuating experimentally induced amnesia was evaluated. The results of these findings were presented in three prestigious international seminars.

07

1993
The Drug Controller of India grants permission to the CDRI to conduct Phase I Clinical Trials (Tolerance Studies) on human volunteers. The results were presented at the XXVIIIth Conference of the Indian Pharmacological Society, Patiala, 23-26 November, 1996.

08

1998
The standardised Bacopa Monnieri containing extract is sub licensed from the CDRI by Life Essence Limited for sale in the UK as the health food supplement MemoryPlus.

09

2002
Successful clinical trials published.
